We’ll pinpoint exactly where understanding broke down.

The Reality

Algebra I has the highest failure rate in high school.

20–35% of 9th graders fail Algebra I nationally.

It’s not a motivation issue. It’s usually a gap in understanding that builds up over time.

When those gaps stack, everything that follows feels confusing and frustrating.

You’re not alone. You just need the right support.

Common reasons students fall behind

  • Missing earlier foundational concepts
  • Not enough personalized help
  • Math taught too fast for them to keep up
  • Confidence drops — grades drop
  • It becomes a cycle that’s hard to break

FAQ

Your questions, answered.

How is this different from Kumon or Mathnasium?

Those are open-ended worksheet programs. UpMath is a fixed 12-week course taught live by a teacher, aimed only at Algebra I, and it starts by diagnosing the specific gaps holding your child back.

Does Zoom tutoring work as well as in-person?

Yes. Groups are capped at five students, everyone works on a shared digital whiteboard, and sessions are live — so students ask questions and get corrected in the moment.

Will my child engage and participate on video?

Small groups make it hard to hide, in a good way. Instructors call on every student each session and share what they saw with you at the Week 6 check-in.

What if my child needs more than 3 months?

The Week 12 assessment tells you where they stand. Families who want to keep going can enroll in the next 12-week cycle, but nothing renews automatically.

What if we have to miss a session?

Every session is recorded and shared with the group, and instructors send a short recap of what was covered so your child can catch up before the next one.
